Prehistory of Lancia Beta
At the end of the Sixties Lancia was represented with the
models Flavia and Fulvia on the market. The large Flaminia was
build until 1967. Lancia was again in financial crises, which had
its roots in the Fifties. Additionally, a sales decrease charged
the balance. Companys like Ford were interested in acquisition.
Nevertheless Fiat, which had already bought Ferrari, made the deal.
In November 1969 Lancia became the status of a subsidiary of Fiat.
At first the Lancia 2000 Berlina, based on Flavia 2000, was
developed. Modifications were also made at the Flavia Coupé and
sold as Lancia 2000 Coupé. These modifications merely consisted in
optical adaptions. No notable technical changes were made. But
Lancia had a big challenge: The development of a complete new car.
The decision came in January 1970.
