The Coachwork
The Beta product series was introduced for the first time at
the Turin Motorshow in November 1972. The structure was a
hatchback sedan, called Beta Berlina, respectively Limousine
and Saloon. The design was realized by Centro Stile Fiat.
The Berlina is nowadays really scarce! If you see one: Be devotional and
bow your head! |
Already in June 1973 the Beta Coupé, a well designed three box
construction, was presented. It has as far as possible the same
mechanical parts, but a completely different coachwork. It was an old
tradition of Lancia to design a completely different appearance for
Coupés and convertibles. The wheel base was shortened in comparison to
the Berlina. The design was made by Pietro Castagnero, who has also
created the fascinating predecessor Fulvia Coupé. |

In 1974 the Spider was launched. It was a convertible version
of the Coupé. The front of the coachwork is similar in appearance to the
Coupé, but the rear end treatment is very different. It was designed
by Pininfarina, but Zagato actually built the car. |

In 1975 Lancia had the courage to launch a very special body - variant
for the Beta:
A mixture of coupé and station wagon. This kind of bodywork was at the
time absolutely rare.
Only a few cars, like the legendary Volvo P 1800 ES, have the same
layout. The design was done by Pietro Castagnero. It based on the Coupe
but with the wheelbase of the Berlina. |

The Montecarlo differs from the other cars of the Beta line in many
respects.
It´s a mid-engined sports two-seater, originally designed for Fiat by Pininfarina.
This smallest Beta was introduced in 1975.
Lancia was not
allowed to call it Montecarlo in the U.S., because another producer had
the rights of that name. So, Lancia decided to call it Scorpion. |

The last version was the Trevi. A three-box version of the Berlina,
which was launched in 1980. It has little bizarre design, but this is
the thrill. It was like Coupé and HPE also available with the
supercharger engine. |
