The Engine
The predecessor types were fitted with narrow-V four-cylinder
and four-cylinder boxer engine. These constructions were considered as too
old and too expensive for the new model - hence unsuitable.
Lancia was under time pressure.
So, Lancia took a very sensible decision, by adapting the Fiat 124
engine to the new model Beta. This engine was fitted with
two camshafts controled by a rubber toothbelt rather than a timing - chain
and represented the highest technical state at
the end of the Sixties. But the Lancia engineers were ambitious
and didnīt transfer that engine without any modifications.
Essential parts, like manifolds, camshafts and carburettors were
revised. The result: more power and torque throughout the rev range . The
maximum value
of torque was now reached at 3000 rpm. In comparison the original
construction by
Fiat needed 4000 rpm. This character of torque is nowadays the
thrill of driving a Beta. You donīt really need to change the
gears so often. |
